Abstract

Technology mediates our relationships through virtual interaction and telecommunication, connecting us over impossible distances while simultaneously alienating our bodies. The Holding Hands project is an Arduino controlled smart textile (scarf) with soft, warm, hands which can hold and be held; maintaining that comfortable distance technology affords us while engaging the body in a tactile way. The resulting object is a sad and sweet solution to the problem of loneliness in a digital world.
